With the growing demand in new energy vehicles, energy storage, and other fields, and driven by the global energy transformation and "carbon neutrality" goals, sodium-ion batteries (hereinafter referred to as "sodium batteries") as a new energy storage technology have received widespread attention and attention, and diversified battery technology routes have become an inevitable trend.

With the growing demand in new energy vehicles, energy storage, and other fields, and driven by the global energy transformation and “carbon neutrality” goals, sodium-ion batteries (hereinafter referred to as “sodium batteries”) as a new energy storage technology have received widespread attention and attention, and diversified battery technology routes have become an inevitable trend.

Why lithium sodium?

From the perspective of resource supply, the sodium reserves in the earth's crust are 2.75%, which is abundant, evenly distributed, and low-cost. In terms of core material properties, the wide temperature range of sodium batteries enables them to effectively cope with extreme environmental scenarios from 40 degrees Celsius to minus 40 degrees Celsius.

In recent years, the output of sodium batteries has shown a rapid growth trend, and the potential market space is very large. According to statistics from the Gaogong Industry Research Institute of Lithium Battery, China's output of sodium ion-positive electrode materials was 900 tons in 2021, and by 2023, the output jumped to more than 8,000 tons. According to statistics from the China Research Institute of Industry, by 2025, my country's planned production capacity of sodium batteries has reached 60GWh (gigawatt hours). Globally, it is expected that by 2030, global sodium battery demand will grow to 526 GWh.

In addition, the capital market is also very interested in the sodium battery industry. The “14th Five-Year Plan for the Development of New Energy Storage” released in February 2022 proposed that new energy storage will move from the commercial start-up stage to the large-scale development stage, and will have the conditions for large-scale commercial application by 2025. The China Physical and Chemical Power Sources Industry Association predicts that the scale of my country's new energy storage industry will exceed one trillion yuan in 2025.
